Enter the Worship Circle is a ‘live’ thing all the way. No overdubs or studio retakes…they hit ‘record’ and went for it! They played acoustic guitars, penny whistle, harmonica, as well as scads of percussion pieces including: djembe, bombo, tambourine, kanjira, snare, bass drum, cymbals, tabala, dumbeks, dholak, tongue drum, shakers, goat toes, cookie sheet, huge rain stick, chimes, bells, bongos, and other stuff … but almost everything on the recording can be played with one guitar and one hand drum, so get it and go for it!

This groundbreaking record included the #1 single You Are So Good To Me that was later covered by Third Day, as well as the anthematic I Will Not Forget You and the bluesy romp of Those Who Trust. Robin and I, as the duo 100 Portraits, joined hands with Waterdeep to create this one of a kind worship recording in 1999 and it is still a helpful gift for so many today. Afterwards Robin and I went on to record three more albums in a very similar acoustic drum circle style with three amazing teams of musicians: Second, Third, and Fourth Circle. Our commitment to the Psalms, but featuring a solo voice and single instrument, followed with four albums–Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4 –in the Chair and Microphone series, and then we even tried an electronic worship experiment called the Village Thrift. I am still surprised how many folks have heard the First Circle and had no idea there were still 8 more albums in the Worship Circle collection!

Recorded by Barry Garret on location at Windfall Lodge, Possum Kingdom, TX. Mixed by Ben and Robin Pasley at Cafe De Basement, Akron, Ohio except ‘Today’ and ‘I Could Run Away’ mixed by Barry Patterson at Paradise Sound and Hal Fitzgerald at Loomis Productions, Sachse, TX. Mastered by Barry Patterson at Paradise Sound, Sachse, TX. Robert Crawford, percussion; Pam Crawford, intercession and hospitality; Brandon Graves, percussion; Christena Graves, guitar and vocals; Don Chaffer, guitar, vocals, penny whistle, and harmonica; Lori Chaffer, guitar and vocals; Ben Pasley, guitar, vocals, and percussion, and Robin Pasley, percussion and vocals. Design by Boyd DuPree, Tyler, TX. All these songs were recorded over three days in a lake lodge in TX. We all stood in a big circle around vocal microphones, and we ran a snake down the hall to the bedroom control room and ADATs. We miked up everything and pushed record. Mixed on a 16 channel analog board in Ben’s basement.

There is something that was innately genuine and deeply authentic about this music. I found a sample song called “You Are My God” on an Indie Christian music site some years ago. I loved the pure simplicity and raw acoustic styling; sounding like a drum circle around a camp fire. Then I bought the ‘electric experiment’ Villiage Thrift which confused me as it was different. Little did I know—and how delighted was I to discover that this first style of ‘You Are My God’ was representative of most of the music being recorded by these guys. Fantastic. I just purchased the first three ‘Circles’ on Amazon Music App, and I plan on purchasing everything else. Please keep making music your worship is so real!!
